Before and After

Pictures of the transformation - Library to Learning Commons

Entrance into the Library  - Before & After

Previously, when students walked into the main area of the library, they were greeted by shelves of paper periodicals.  The message that this sent was that the library was a place of paper, was out of date, and was only for serious research.  Changing the first view of the library into couches, tables, and minimal paper reference was an important first step.  This set the new tone for the Learning Commons as one where students could come and sit, work, hang-out, and use the space for their different learning needs.

Student work tables - Before & After

Before, the work area was uncomfortable, and had little space to move around.  After moving the paper periodicals to the main stacks, there was room to create different configurations of tables and space.  This now allowed for flexible space and meeting needs.  Students were able to work together or alone.  This space was used for various needs, including a staff meeting, small class, and study group.

Reading area - Before & After

Before, the reading area felt small and dark.  Moving the periodical displays and adding more comfortable furniture allowed this to become a place for students to feel welcome.  It has been used frequently as a space for students who are studying, who need a more relaxed setting to work in.

Main Library area - Before & After

Previously the library was broken up by shelves of paper periodicals and reference books.  By moving and weeding items, space was able to be created, and students were made to feel welcome.  Alumni who came by have always been shocked at the changes, since the furniture signaled a move away from a restrictive and quiet library to an open and collaborative learning commons.

As a result of changing the physical layout of the library (learning commons) the percentage of students who used the space increased.  Students, Faculty and Community users all had positive things to say about the new space, and ended up using it more.

What a lovely happy ending ... for now.
